Root Canal Therapy Can Often Prevent Extraction

If you are experiencing severe tooth pain, you may have an infection. Fortunately, root canal treatment can relieve discomfort and typically prevent the need for extraction. Dr. Amber Khan can perform gentle, precise treatment to restore patients' health. At Hunter's Creek Dental Center, we go above and beyond to provide personalized, attentive care in a welcoming environment. Additionally, we can accommodate dental emergencies often associated with root canal infections at our conveniently located office in Orlando, FL

How Does Infection Develop?

A root canal infection occurs when decay reaches the inner portion of the tooth, known as the dental pulp. Infection can permeate the inner tooth chamber if the tooth has suffered a crack or advanced decay has been left untreated.

Common Symptoms

While some patients may not experience any noticeable symptoms, common warning signs may include:

  • A severe toothache
  • Discoloration of the tooth
  • Gum swelling and tenderness
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important that you schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Regular exams can help to screen for infection in cases that progress without any obvious signs.

Why Is Treatment Important?

It is imperative that you seek timely treatment because if the condition progresses, you will need to undergo an extraction. Once a tooth has been extracted, you will need to replace your missing tooth or jawbone atrophy will occur. This can be detrimental to your oral health, causing further tooth loss as well as a sunken, aged appearance. We urge every patient to treat dental infections as soon as symptoms arise.

Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?

Often, patients compare the discomfort they experience during a root canal with that of a regular dental filling. We make every effort to minimize your discomfort by using advanced tools, including a rotary handpiece and an intraoral camera. A rotary handpiece is a special tool designed for more precise, gentler, and faster root canal treatment.

Additionally, a local anesthetic is applied before treatment to completely numb the area. We also offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation which can be especially beneficial if you suffer from dental anxiety.

Root canal treatment clears infected tissue and protects the tooth against further damage.

What to Expect during Treatment

To begin, Dr. Khan will create a small opening at the top of the tooth, allowing her to access its inner portion. She will remove the infected tissue and disinfect the interior and root canal chambers. A rubber-like substance is then used to fill the inner portion of the tooth and a filling is placed. In most cases, a dental crown is required to provide protection and strength to the weakened tooth.

We make every effort to minimize your discomfort by using advanced tools, including a rotary handpiece and an intraoral camera.

Qualifying patients can receive a same-day crown created in our office. Otherwise, you will return to our office during a second appointment to have your permanent restoration placed. We offer a range of the finest tooth-colored materials to provide you with natural-looking, long-lasting results.
